Welcome To Run 4 Eyes...

...the story of my efforts to run the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon and raise money to help find a cure and better treatments for Macular Disease.

A few years ago I was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration. Here are a few facts about the disease, which can take many forms and has a variety of causes:

  • In 2015 Macular Disease affected 6.2 million people globally;
  • Macular disease is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK;
  • There is currently no cure for Macular Disease;
  • Treatment, when appropriate, involves monthly injections into one or both eyeballs.

I'm one of the lucky ones. As of this writing only my left eye is affected, and after a couple of years of injections my vision is stable. However, my sight will never again be normal, and it could start to deteriorate again at any time. And there's no guarantee that my right eye will not be affected at some point.

Although I remain optimistic that I will continue to lead a normal life, I want to take the opportunity now, through my London Marathon run, to raise money towards research into finding a cure and better treatments... and to provide much-needed support for those who have not been as fortunate as I.

I was successful in securing a 'Good for Age' place in the 2019 London Marathon and on race day, April 28th, I'll be just four days shy of my 72nd birthday. Between now and then I am looking to raise AT LEAST £2,620.00 for the Macular Society. This would represent £100.00 per mile of the 26.2 mile event.

But I can't do it on my own. I am working towards securing donations and sponsorships from corporate entities, but it will be the support of my family, friends, and fellow runners that I know will make the difference!
